? Know Your Car!
1. Ask your salesperson about both active and
passive safety features.

2.
Know the handling and safety characteristics
of the vehicle you're buying, and drive it accordingly.
? ? Children & Back seat!
Does your child ride in the back seat?
The back seat is generally the safest
place in a crash. If your vehicle has a
passenger air bag, it is essential for ch-
ildren 12 and under to ride in back.
? Don't drink and drive!
Even though progress is being made through
government and private drunk-driving count-
ermeasures,
.a lot of drivers, particularly young
people,
.have not gotten the message that
drinking and driving is the number-one highway
killer.
? ? Seat belt, safety belt!
Put the belt through the correct slots.
If your safety seat can be used facing
either way, use the correct belt path
for each direction. Check the vehicle
owner's manual and safety seat instr-
uction book for guidance.
? Buckle up!
NHTSA estimates that, from 1983 through 1990,
an estimated 24,900 lives were saved by safety
belts. So wear both your lap and shoulder belts,
even if your car is equipped with automatic safe-
ty belts or air bags.
? ? Older child fit safety belt!
The child should be tall enough to sit
without slouching, with knees bent at
the edge of the seat, with feet on the
floor. The lap belt must fit low and tight
across the upper thighs.
